with each hand she took the oath
of the summer days
she once had
and when she fell down
she closed her eyes
never wanting to open her eyes
again

he talked her out of it
he said it wasn’t the time
to lose a piece of the summer
she once had
and when she fell down
he opened his arms
never wanting to let her go
again

we all saw the promise
the ageless wonder
of this short summer
and when we closed our eyes
we all opened our arms
to see them return
once again
to a land long forgotten
